Are you worried about taking a plane when you are pregnant? No need, say the researchers at RCOG (Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of the United Kingdom), you are not at risk.
Experts say flying during pregnancy is very low risk premature birth, the main reason for stress in expectant mothers. According to the researchers, taking the plane is therefore not recommended for pregnant women except in cases of pregnancy at risk (history of miscarriage, of ectopic pregnancy or a multiple pregnancy). In this case, it is best to make sure that everything is fine by performing an ultrasound before departure.
Some tips
Among other things, RCOG researchers point out that body scanners in airports are harmless, as is the reduction of oxygen during the flight. However, the RCOG team recalls a few safety measures: take out insurance that covers health and repatriation costs in the event of a serious problem, check the compulsory vaccines (some of which are not recommended during pregnancy) in the event of travel to a country exotic and wear compression stockings with graduated compression in the event of a flight of 4 hours or more.
In order to travel in pleasant conditions and reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis, the researchers advise to walk regularly inside the plane, to choose an aisle seat for ease of movement, to perform exercises in the seat every 30 minutes of flight and to drink plenty of water for s ” hydrate while limiting alcohol and caffeine.
