A Porsche 968 has just been sold at auction for $164,000 in the United States. This coupé in standard version, like new and equipped with an atypical finish, had already changed hands in 2020. For $100,000 less.
The 911 is no longer the only Porsche prized by collectors… and speculators. Some models that have been shunned for a long time have seen their ratings skyrocket for some time. This is the case of the 968 marketed from 1992 to 1995, the ultimate Porsche of the “transaxle” line started with the 924 in 1976. A copy of the coupe has just been sold at auction for $164,000 (approximately €148,600) on the American online auction site Bring A Trailer. Beyond the price, characteristics and condition of the car, it is the colossal capital gain achieved in a short time by its seller that is surprising.
Standard version, single finish
This US-spec 1992 Porsche 968 has just 8,222 miles on the odometer, or 13,232 km. It is in perfect condition, complete with its original accessories, a documented history, and it is the only example referenced to present a finish combining a purple “Amethyst Metallic” bodywork with upholstery in light gray fabric contrasted by magenta for the seams, the upper part of the dashboard and the bottom of the door panels. It is equipped with an electric sunroof and a rear spoiler among other options. Nevertheless, it is a standard 968, powered by a 240 hp 3.0 four-cylinder engine associated with the rear wheels by a six-speed manual gearbox and a self-locking differential. It’s not a slimmed-down CS, let alone a rare 305hp Turbo S, yet it sold for more than a brand-new 500hp Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS.
$100,000 profit in two years
Looking around a bit, we find the trace of this Porsche 968, serial number WP0AA2965NS820591, among the lots of an auction organized by RM Sotheby’s in March 2020. The car was then sold for $64,400. (around €64,000 today). It has therefore just brought in some $100,000 (€90,600) in capital gains to its last seller who has only driven 33 miles (53 km) behind the wheel in the meantime. In 2021, the car received a service with replacement of the timing belt and draining of the cooling circuit.
When we know that standard 968s in excellent condition are generally trading for less than €80,000 today, we can doubt that the new owner of this one hopes to carry out a similar operation to that of its predecessor. Who knows, maybe it’s a real lover of this model and this configuration who had the means to afford the object of his dreams.
