“Pollution kills more than Cancer.“Erik Solheim, Head of the Program ofUnited Nations (UN) for the environment, launched the alert Tuesday, August 30 in Geneva (Switzerland). This former Norwegian minister has made the fight against pollution his battle horse. He thus insists on the conversion of coal to renewable energies. Because in Europe alone, coal pollution would cause 23,000 deaths per year. Likewise, indoor and outdoor air pollution would kill 5.5 million people every year, including 3 million people in China.
Allergies, respiratory, infectious and vector-borne diseases
By mobilizing the various actors such as political leaders and companies against pollution, Erik Solheim recalls that this will make it possible, in the longer term, to fight against climate change. However, a recent study published in The Lancet showed that the impact of this climate change on agricultural production could lead to 500,000 deaths by 2050. Global warming could also cause an increase in the number of respiratory diseases such asasthma, infectious and vector-borne diseases, gastrointestinal diseases but also the number of allergies. It is thus estimated that by 2050, the number of Europeans allergic to ragweed pollen will have doubled.
