It is “the” health scandal of the moment: this Friday, February 1, the Minister of Agriculture, Didier Guillaume, announced that 800 kg of spoiled meat have been shipped to “nine companies” of commerce in France.
Friday noon, “more than 500 kg” had been found (and destroyed) by the health services of the ministry, said the general directorate of food (DGAL). The rest ? “We do not know if they went into commerce, it could have remained in fridges” declared the minister, who added: “it is a terrible fraud, an economic fraud, a health fraud of a slaughterhouse Polish ”.
What happened ? “We are dealing with a pathology,” explained the Polish Minister of Agriculture. On one site (the Kalinowo slaughterhouse), sick cows were slaughtered without the knowledge and without the green light from veterinarians. He said it was an “isolated incident”.
Advice from associations: read the labels carefully!
A total of 2.7 tonnes of rotten meat were sold to Finland, Hungary, Estonia, Romania, Sweden, France, Spain, Lithuania, Portugal and Slovakia. In addition, 7 tonnes of meat from this slaughterhouse were distributed to around 20 points of sale in Poland.
In France, the consumer association UFC Que Choisir asked the authorities to reveal “the brands, products and batch numbers” of the products possibly concerned.
It also recommended that consumers, when purchasing bovine meat products (ready meals, pasta and sauces containing meat, canned food, etc.), “give preference to those explicitly mentioning the precise country of origin in the list. ingredients (outside Poland), rather than those that use the opaque EU (European Union) label ”.
