In Madagascar, the plague continues to gain ground. The epidemic, which began in September, has already affected 500 people and killed 54 people on the island. It has been classified as “grade 2” by the World Health Organization (WHO), which means that the risk of spread is high. A phenomenon that worries the Malagasy authorities, but also those of the surrounding islands.
1.2 million antibiotics sent by WHO
To stem this worrying phenomenon, Professor Mamy Lalatiana Andriamanarivo, Malagasy Minister of Health, announced the arrival of 250 health professionals to help the teams already present in Antananarivo, the capital of the island and in Toamasina. . Among them, 57 doctors, 147 paramedics and 46 support staff. The WHO has also mobilized by providing 1.2 million doses ofantibiotics to fight the plague.
What worries the institution? The potential spread of this infectious disease contagious. “It is already present in several cities and it is the start of the epidemic season, which normally goes from September to April”, specifies Doctor Charlotte Ndiaye, WHO representative in Madagascar. Well-founded fears, since a first case of plague was confirmed in the Seychelles: it was a 34-year-old man returning from Madagascar. Since then, vigilance has also been required in Reunion and Mayotte.
