Yesterday was World Plagiocephaly and Cranial Deformity Day. On the occasion of this day, the association of patients “The link” announced that it wished to seize the High authority of health vis-a-vis this “epidemic” which would affect 20% of the babies.
Functional plagiocephaly or “flat head” syndrome is a deformity of the infant’s skull that is characterized by flattening of the back or one side of the skull. As the infant’s skull is particularly malleable, the deformation occurs when the baby, lying on his back, always rests his head on the same side.
Alternate baby’s sleeping positions
“Consultations are exploding, parents are worried, but nothing is moving. It is therefore up to us, users, to take hold of the subject. The consequences in terms of public health are serious”, declares Claude Rambaud, vice-president of Lien and co-president of Ciss (Interassociative collective on health) in Parisian.
What worries the association is that plagiocephaly does not only cause aesthetic sequelae. Many studies question the link between plagiocephaly and the incidence of jaw imbalance with occlusion problem, hearing disorders or postural (scoliosis).
For its part, theFrench chiropractic association suggests alternating the baby’s positions and in particular:
– The sleeping position. If he sleeps hard with his back, place his head towards the end of the bed on even days and down from the bed on odd days. As the baby’s head is attracted to the light, the pressure will not always be on the same side of the head.
– The position (right arm, left arm) when breastfeeding and bottle-feeding.
– The positions during waking times.
– The means of portage.
She recalls that chiropractors have in their field of expertise techniques which make it possible to determine the degree of severity of plagiocephaly and to work gently on what generates this joint lesion.
