According to a study by a team of researchers at the Murdoch Research Institute for Children in Melbourne, a peanut allergy could be cured with treatment with probiotics. Explanations.
A probiotic-based treatment
Peanut allergy is of great concern as it can lead to the sufferer to anaphylaxis (difficulty breathing) and may die from it. Finding a way to eradicate this type of allergies would therefore be a major step forward. However, it seems that Australian researchers have succeeded in to obtain the cure of patients suffering from this allergy.
According to work published in the British medical journal The Lancet, these researchers administered, in 2013, to children suffering from peanut allergy probiotics with low doses of peanut protein for 18 months. At the end of the experiment, 80% of the patients could tolerate the peanut. 4 years later, they were still 70% to be able to eat peanuts without risk of allergenic reactions.
Treat all kinds of food allergies
This long-term efficacy of treatment is very encouraging and pushes researchers to go even further in the development of treatments for people who suffer from all types of allergies. ” This is a major step forward in the identification of an effective treatment for solve the problem of food allergy in western societies », Commented Mimi Tang, who led this work.
Australian researchers hope to be able to market their treatment soon, but before any marketing, it will still have to be the subject of a larger clinical trial. If these good results are confirmed on a large scale, then commercialization will not delay. According to Health Insurance, food allergies affect 6% of children and more than 3% of adults in Europe.
