Transfusions performed after November 13 saved lives. 88,000 samples were taken in 1 week. This is 55% more than a usual week.
A few hours after the terrorist attacks that rocked Paris and Saint-Denis on November 13, the French gathered in blood donation drives. Thanks to them, the reserves quickly found themselves full. And in a press release published on Monday, the French Blood Establishment (EFS) once again thanks these blood donors “for their commitment and their generosity”.
A sensitive period for reserves
Between November 16 and 22, 88,000 samples were taken in France, an increase of 55% compared to a usual week. “The blood transfusions carried out with the wounded have saved lives”, writes the EFS. Sufficient mobilization of the French?
Not really, because at the end of the year, the EFS also wants to recall that beyond this unprecedented citizen enthusiasm, the mobilization must continue in December and January, “a particularly sensitive period for blood reserves” . The reason for this call, a lower attendance during the holiday season.
As always, the Establishment recalls that today, “no treatment or synthetic drug can yet replace labile blood products”. Blood donation is therefore irreplaceable. And even if there is currently no emergency, the EFS stresses that the needs in France amount to 10,000 donations per day.
