Paracetamol prolonged-release (LP) may soon be pulled from drugstore shelves. Pharmacovigilance experts from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) draw the attention of European countries which market this painkiller in this form to the risks of overdose linked to the prolonged release of the molecule.
A greater risk than the health benefits
“Experience has shown overdoses due to the way the drug is released into the body, especially with high dosages. an overdose can lead to severe liver damage or death “ underlines the European Medicines Agency in a press release.
The risk is all the higher as tramadolis present in prolonged-release paracetamol, further complicating the effects of overdose.
Since the Pharmacovigilance Committee has not been able to identify means of minimizing this risk of overdose in patients on treatment, it concludes that the risk is greater than the benefits and therefore recommends that the marketing of this medicinal product be suspended.
