Chondroitin and glucosamine are proteoglycans, that is to say proteins and sugars that contribute to the hydration and flexibility of cartilage. They are made by chondrocytes (cells that form cartilage) but with age, this production decreases. In case of osteoarthritisit is failing, hence the interest of supplementation to normalize cartilage metabolism and prevent it from continuing its progressive destruction.
1 to 2 months to feel benefits
According to the HAS (Haute Autorité de santé), some studies are contradictory and their effectiveness is moderate (hence a delisting of products by Health Insurance, despite the opinion of patient associations). But they are widely used and would be as effective as anti-inflammatories, relieving 80% of mild and moderate osteoarthritis, especially knee osteoarthritis.
These two substances are part of slow-acting symptomatic anti-osteoarthritis (Aasal), it takes one to two months to feel the benefits.
Anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects
Chondroitin improves mobility, inhibits the destruction of cartilage, stimulates its production and reduces inflammation.
The effects of glucosamine also seem to be analgesic (painkiller). The ideal is to combine the two substances, ensuring that the dosages are sufficient. The recommended dose is 1000 to 1200 mg/day for chondroitin and 1000 to 1500 mg/day for glucosamine, in two or three doses during meals, for at least two months.
Both are well tolerated. But medical advice is advised in case of diabetes, asthma and anticoagulant treatment.
Essential oils to complement
To complete the effect of oral supplements, an essential oil of wintergreen or wintergreen, lemon eucalyptus or simply aspic lavender can be used locally. How ? A few drops in light massages on the painful areas, as often as necessary.
To be diluted (5 drops in 1 tsp) in a vegetable oil, ideally St. John’s wort, calophylle or arnica.
