The clitoris would contain more than 10,000 nerve fibers, which makes it an even more sensitive organ than scientists thought. Explanations.
- Stimulation of the clitoris can cause an orgasm.
- The clitoris is the only organ whose sole purpose is to provide pleasure.
- The best position to reach the female orgasm would be the missionary, when the woman has a pillow under the pelvis, because the blood flow is more important towards the clitoris.
It was thought to contain 8,000, but it is actually 10,281 nerve fibers that contain the clitoris, according to the work of researchers from theOregon Health & Science University presented during the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America and the International Society for Sexual Medicine.
More than 10,000 nerve fibers in the clitoris
The clitoris is the organ of female sexual pleasure. It is located where the labia minora meet, on the woman’s sex. It has an external part and an internal part, which includes a dorsal nerve which takes part in the sensation of pleasure because this is composed of nerves which carry electrical impulses between the brain and the rest of the body. In the endso it is this dorsal nerve that allows women to feel and respond to touch.
“It’s amazing to think that over 10,000 nerve fibers are concentrated in something as small as the clitoris.“, explains Dr. Blair Peters, lead author of the study, in a communicated.
Previous studies estimated that the clitoris contained 8,000 nerve fibers, or 20% less than what the researchers just found. So, to arrive at this new result, the scientists took tissue samples from just one side of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris from seven people performing gender affirmation surgeries.
The clitoris, an organ that contains more nerve fibers than the hand
The scientists then studied these tissues under a microscope and observed that they contained 5,140 dorsal clitoral nerve fibers. But since the dorsal nerve is symmetrical, they therefore multiplied this figure by two to estimate the total number of nerve fibers contained in the clitoris, or 10,281.
“This is especially surprising when comparing the clitoris to other larger structures in the human body.continues Blair Peters. Even though the hand is much, much larger than the clitoris, the median nerve (already known to have a very high nerve fiber density) contains only about 18,000 nerve fibers, less than twice the nerve fibers of the much smaller clitoris“.
In the future, the researchers want to conduct the same study in men to quantify the number of nerve fibers in the glans penis, the part of the organ responsible for male pleasure.
