After the announcement of the presence of a probable carcinogenic herbicide in feminine hygiene products, an organic brand is recalling 3,100 boxes.
Bad surprise for organic lovers. In its latest issue, 60 million consumers alert on the presence of glyphosate – the active substance in Roundup – in several brands of panty liners. Among them, an organic brand: Organyc. On February 24, the latter announced the recall of 3,100 boxes, in France and Canada, “as a precaution”.
25 nanograms / gram
As the survey of the magazine of the National Institute of Consumption had suggested, the panty liners, however organic, of the Organyc brand contain residual traces of glyphosate. The company’s parent company, Corman, commissioned an external analysis. The doses are very low but very present: they are in the order of 25 nanograms per gram.
“These traces should not have been present in organic cotton, admits the manufacturer, which has launched surveys of American and Indian suppliers. We don’t think it’s dangerous. This is a pure precautionary measure, because our priority is the safety and health of our consumers. Indeed, glyphosate is classified as probable carcinogen for humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
Total opacity
Other brands are implicated by the case of 60 million consumers. Always sanitary napkins, Tampax, ob and Nett tampons are also in the magazine’s viewfinder. This is not the first controversy that targets them: last October already, an Argentinian team alerted to the presence of glyphosate in these products. These products being in direct contact with the vaginal mucous membranes, doubt reigns.
The manufacturers of feminine hygiene products comply with the regulations of the paper industry… and therefore have no obligation to inform customers about the composition of the products! A situation denounced by many consumers. The most emblematic is undoubtedly Mélanie Doerflinger, author of an online petition on the platform Exchange. Signed by more than 186,000 Internet users, it calls for more transparency on the composition of tampons, sanitary napkins and panty liners.
