A tenth of 50-year-old men have a heart that is ten years older than them, according to a study by Public Health England.
The heart, a reflection of the way of life. According to an analysis by the official agency Public Health England, men’s hearts in the UK are not very healthy… A tenth of men aged 50 have a heart of someone who is 60. With a heart condition 10 years advanced from their real age, these men are endangering their health, warn experts.
The study covers 1.2 million people, who spent the Heart Age Test (Heart Age Test) launched in 2015. The objective of this test was to assess cardiac risk profiles. Of this cohort, 33,000 men were 50 years old. It is on this group that the national agency has focused its research, because the risks are increased within this age group.
7,400 people will die in the month
For these men, the advanced age of their hearts is associated with a loss of life of ten years, the researchers say. The study also predicts that 7,400 people will die of heart disease or a stroke within the next month.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death among men and the second among women. They also showed relatively better heart health: among those who had a heart ten years older than their actual age, only 36% were women. The rest were therefore represented by men.
Blood pressure
Experts do not evoke factors at the origin of this cardiac aging, but one can imagine that this phenomenon is due to a set of problems, among which a still high smoking in the United Kingdom, in particular among this generation, a sedentary lifestyle significant, too regular or intense alcohol consumption, or overweight observed among all age groups.
Public Health England also reports that half of the study participants were unable to specify their blood pressure. In England, 5.5 million people have too high blood pressure and are not aware of it, according to calculations by the agency, which refers to an “extremely worrying” situation.
