The whole family came to visit when it was your birthday. Mother spent hours in the kitchen preparing homemade snacks and drinks. They were displayed on a table in the living room around which all the visitors sat in a circle. Which of these nine delicacies were on your table?
1. Bowl with canned fruit
Ladies drank bowl, sweet white wine or berry jenever on birthdays. Bowl was made from red wine with canned fruit. A little whipped cream on top and the party was complete.
2. Cigarette glasses
Glasses with cigarettes were placed on the table especially for the visit. This usually contained different types, such as Belinda or Caballero. In no time the room was blue with smoke and the glasses were refilled with new cigarettes throughout the evening. For men there were often also a few Bolknak cigars ready. For birthdays, the luxury lighter was also taken out of the closet, just like a beautiful ashtray.
3. Pickles with pickle, cheese and onion
The pickles with pickles, cheese and silver onions were not missing on any birthday. Slices of sausage also did well on a skewer and sometimes mother varied with a scoop of ginger or grapes.
4. Stuffed Eggs
The more creative housewife got to work with stuffed eggs, asparagus in ham and egg or smoked meat. Also popular: toasts with egg slices.
5. Hussar salad
In the 80s and 90s, a homemade Russian salad was always on the table. Garnished with half eggs and pickle fans. Delicious!
6. Bowl with pretzels
Bowls with different types of pretzels could certainly not be missing on the table. Salty peanuts were a favorite.
7. Exotic
Who remembers Exota’s lemonade? Children’s favorite drink. You had the lemonade in the colors red (raspberry), green (grenadine), brown (champagne pils), yellow (lemon) and white (cider). From the 1950s it was a great success in our country. Until it turned out that the glasses could explode. After that it was quickly over with Exota. In 1973 the company went bankrupt.
8. Sausage slices
Slices of sausage were often on a skewer with pickle and onion, but you could also eat it on its own with a little mustard. Boiled sausage, ox sausage and liver sausage were especially popular.
9. Herring with onions
Even in the past, the salty herring was served at parties. Cut into pieces with a Dutch flag in the middle. In the middle of the bowl of herring was a mountain of freshly cut onions and a bowl of pickles.
What else was on your table that was not mentioned in the list? Let me know in the comments.
