How Peugeot will renew its goose that lays golden eggs? The builder has been working on it for a few years now. L’argus reveals the first information on the P64 project which corresponds to the new Peugeot 3008. Expected at the end of 2023, it will bet on the hybrid and the electric, and on an SUV-coupe style.
What is Peugeot preparing for the third generation of the 3008? What will it look like? Although it will not be released until the end of 2023, the new Lion SUV is a lot of talk but the manufacturer is not giving up. And for good reason, replacing a bestseller is not easy. At the time of its restyling in the fall of 2020, it had already sold 800,000 copies in four years and its success story continues. Therefore, Peugeot has every interest in remaining silent on this P64 project in order to protect the commercial career of the current model. For several months, L’argus has been digging, gathering and cross-checking information on the new 3008, whose design will remain the number 1 asset.

Muscular lines and SUV-coupe styling
According to the first testimonies, which saw the famous P64, the new 3008 is less “boxy” (cubic at the rear) than the current one and adopts a profile of SUV-coupe with a rear window tilted like a Lexus NX. We can’t help but remember the Peugeot Quartz concept of 2014, the work of Gilles Vidal, the former style boss. Before taking the reins of Renault design in 2020, he led the team for the P64 and P74 projects (future 5008). Following his departure, Carlos Tavares urged his replacement, Matthias Hossann, to retouch all the projects Gilles Vidal worked on. Nevertheless, the project being well advanced, the final touch-ups only concerned the shields as well as the light signature which will be distinguished by 3 LED hooks on each side. Longer, the 3008 III will have a reduced glass surface and a less pronounced headroom at the rear. In other words, families will have to turn to the 5008.

Evolution of the i-cockpit
As for the 308, the 3008 III will host an advanced i-cockpit, the highlight of which will be the new multimedia system inaugurated by the sedan. The panoramic touch screen is associated with i-toggle, six tactile keys positioned under the screen and customizable. The SUV will also enrich its baggage of equipment that will tend towards the automation of driving. At Stellantis, the interior revolution will wait until 2026 thanks to the partnership signed with Taiwanese Foxconn in May 2021. With the hope of catching up with Tesla.
New platform for the e-3008
The 3008 will inaugurate the new STLA Medium platform, known internally under the names of e-VMP or EMP2 V4. Unlike Renault or Volkswagen, this base will not be dedicated to electricity since it will still accommodate hybrid engines. Consequently, the engineers did not start with a blank sheet, the objective being to electrify and modernize the EMP2 base, born in 2012. To produce the STLA Medium, the Sochaux plant undergoes its transformation and will be from 2022 reorganized around a single production line. This metamorphosis will make it possible to produce a vehicle in less than 4 hours instead of 6 today.
100% made in France
The Peugeot e-3008 will have one or two electric motors (EDM2 400V) capable of delivering 170 to 245 hp. These will be manufactured in Trémery (Moselle) by the Nidec-PSA e-Motors joint venture. They will be powered by a battery whose capacity will vary from 87 to 104 kWh for a range of 400 to 700 km. It will be manufactured in Douvrin in the North by ACC (joint venture between Total / Saft, Stellantis and Mercedes) from the end of 2023. Date on which the e-3008 is to be released. Therefore, the first models could temporarily receive a Chinese battery supplied by BYD already planned for the Chinese version of the Peugeot.

Goodbye diesel, make way for hybrids
The current 1.5 BlueHDi 130 will not be renewed since the 3008 will rely on the hybrid. Under the hood will be housed the 3è 1.2 PureTech engine generation whose production will begin in Trémery in 2022 and which will be distinguished by a distribution chain. It will be available as a 48V mild-hybrid (light hybridization) with an alternator-starter associated with the manual gearbox, while the automatic version will swap the current Aisin EAT8 gearbox for the e-DCT7, manufactured in partnership with Punch Powertrain from 2023. This transmission in its 320V variant will also be used for plug-in hybrids which will host an evolution of the 1.6 PureTech which will be produced from 2023 at Opel in Hungary.
The mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid range of the Peugeot 3008:
- 1.2 PureTech MHEV 48V manual transmission
- 1.2 PureTech MHEV 48V e-DCT7
- 1.6 PureTech PHEV e-DCT7 180 hp
- 1.6 PureTech PHEV e-DCT7 225 hp
