On the eve of Eczema Awareness Day, a new survey reveals that many children suffer socially from this skin disease.
- Eczema affects the quality of life of 2.5 million French people of all ages.
- Eczema is a chronic skin disease that occurs through inflammatory flare-ups and can affect all parts of the body.
According to a new survey*, 15% of children suffering from eczema, and up to 51% of severe cases, must endure at least once a week the teasing of their classmates, when it is not a question of fights.
unhappy children
33% of children (69% of severe cases) also say they have been uncomfortable, unhappy or sad in the last seven days because of their illness. 22% of children with eczema also report sleep problems in the past seven days (67% of severe cases). Furthermore, 46% of children never talk about their illness with their friends and only 2% talk about it.
What to do to protect your child?
In this context, the French Eczema Association recommends to parents:
– at the beginning of the school year, inform the teacher/teacher, director, or even the nurse from school.
– Talk regularly about eczema with the child, of course adapting the discussion to his age and personality.
– Ask for flexible hours. Often tired because of lack of sleep, children suffering from eczema may need rest periods during the day.
– Propose to teachers to organize in the class “an eczema workshop” to inform about the disease.
Eczema is manifested by intense itching, red patches, scales, crusts, lesions, oozing blisters, skin infections, pain, swelling and burning sensations.
