From March 22, 72,000 flyers will be distributed to customers and owners of bars and restaurants to promote the “tobacco-free materrasses” system in 330 places in Paris and 245 establishments in Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Nantes and Strasbourg and Toulouse.
This operation was set up by Marisol Touraine, Minister of Social Affairs and Health. Planned in the National Smoking Reduction Program (PNRT) 2014-2019, it also aims to protect former smokers and motivate people who want to get rid of this bad habit.
“This unprecedented device should allow the French to identify the terraces which offer spaces totally or partially free from smoke,” said the Ministry of Health in a statement.
The signatory establishments are listed free of charge on the materrassesanstabac.com site and on the mobile application My tobacco-free terrace available on Apple Store today and on Google Play from tomorrow.
Tobacco: a risk factor for early mortality
The fight against smoking comes in response to worrying figures from the National Institute for Public Health Surveillance (Invs). In fact, tobacco consumption, which had decreased from the 1970s, has increased again since 2005, particularly among women and in the underprivileged classes, reaching nearly 34% of adults. However, smoking kills 200 times a day in France and costs each consumer between 10 and 15 years of life.
