Growing a mustache and playing sports to raise awareness of male pathologies is Movember’s challenge.
With the arrival of November, mustaches will once again bloom on faces. Nothing to do with any fashion, it is quite simply the return of “Movember” which celebrates its 6 years in France this year. Contraction of the words mustaches and November, Movember is an annual event during which men are invited to grow a mustache to raise awareness … Movember Foundation, which presents itself as the first global NGO dedicated to men’s health, aims to “promote prevention for men of all ages and to advance research, in particular on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention ”.
Three out of four suicides are committed by men
With more than 11,000 deaths and 200,000 attempts per year, France is very affected by the question of suicide. Men are much more likely to commit suicide than women: they account for three quarters of this type of death. This excess male mortality is observed in most countries.
In addition to growing a few hairs, Movember encourages men to take up sporting challenges and to organize or participate in the many events that will take place during the month of November. The objective is to collect donations for men’s health.
597 million euros raised
With great success: since the launch of Movember by a few Australian friends in 2003, the movement has been joined by 5 million people and has raised more than 597 million euros.
This money is used to fund 1,200 scientific research programs to fight prostate and testicular cancer and prevent suicide in men.
