One month to work on a homemade mustache and raise awareness about male cancers, that is the goal of Movember. Registrations are open to men and women.
Growing your mustache to “change the face of men’s health”: this is the principle of Movember, the male counterpart of Pink October. The initiative is shifted, but assumed as such. Once again this year, the Movember Foundation calls on its Mo Bros (“mustache brothers”) and its Mo Sistas (“mustache sisters”) to participate in the hottest events to spread information and raise funds on cancers of prostate and testicles, but also this year on men’s mental health.
30 days of homemade mustache
Movember registrations have been open since October 1st. Men and women alike can participate in this month of solidarity, and even form teams. The kick-off is given, like every year, on November 1, the famous “Shave down day.” The participants shave clean. For 30 days, they will grow a homemade mustache and be able to unleash their creativity, like the participants from previous years.
Behind the frivolous aspect of the initiative, there is serious action: dince its creation in 2004, Movember has raised 409 million euros collected, 800 programs have been funded around the world. In 2013, the movement brought together 4 million people, including 13,700 French. With success since the CHRU of Lille, which participates in Movember, received 161,000 euros to finance its work on prostate cancer. This year, the Foundation is also funding a crossover clinical trial on the treatment of prostate cancer, which will take place in France and Switzerland.
In 2013, Movember attracted many Hollywood stars, from George Clooney to Bradley Cooper to Ewan McGregor. In France, athletes have also highlighted their facial hair: Maxime Médard, rugby player at Stade Toulousain, Jérôme Fernandez, Olympic gold medalist in handball, Julien Lizeroux, vice-world champion in ski slalom … and even the Racing Métro 92 team!

Fund research
Throughout the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas are called upon to organize events, educate those around them about men’s health, and collect donations. Mustache races, auctioning real mustaches, creating giant mustaches… the most eccentric ideas are accepted. There is only one imperative: to talk about the movement around you, on Facebook Or on Twitter. And at the end of November, a last meeting invites these volunteers to “celebrate the love of Mo”… but also to elect the Man of Movember.
