The Regional Health Agency (ARS) of the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region has published a study Wednesday July 10 which reveals an impressive number of bladder cancers in Marseille. Compared to the rest of the territory, the rate of bladder cancer in men is 50% higher.
The study was conducted between 2013 and 2016 by Santé Publique France. It concerned three types of cancer: acute leukemia, bladder and kidney, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. Results ? While in France, 13 new cases of bladder cancer were identified in the department, they were 1,735, in a male population only.
The fault of the environment?
On the side of women also the risk is much higher (by 80%) of developing bladder cancer in Marseille than elsewhere in France. However, they are much less numerous, 395 new cases have been recorded.
Among the places singled out: 6 arrondissements in Marseille, Cassis, La Ciotat and Aubagne. But why ? Tobacco could be involved. A new study will also focus on pollutants in the air. That said, the Bouches-du-Rhône Cancer Observatory refuses for the moment to link these results to “environmental or occupational exposure” as long as the rest of the study has not been carried out.
