During an asthma attack, the lining of the bronchi thickens and contracts, so the air no longer passes properly, both on inspiration and on expiration. Breathing therefore becomes difficult, we speak of “wheezing” breathing.
These difficulties actually cause a temporary lack of oxygen, a consequence but not the cause of the asthma attack. Nevertheless, a crisis ofasthma that lasts is an emergency.
