When the European compact station wagons give the first to plug-in hybrid technology, the Chinese MG fully electrifies its own. Promised below the € 30,000 mark, the MG 5 which will be launched in February 2022 will be able to pull a 500 kg trailer and travel (theoretically) 400 km.
Compact electric sedans are just beginning to enter the scene. This is evidenced by the 100% electric Renault Mégane E-Tech, which will launch, in spring 2022, in pursuit of the Volkswagen ID.3. For their part, the compact “watted” SUVs (Volkswagen ID.4, Skoda Enyaq, MG Marvel R) do the same. Corn European manufacturers do not seem to believe in the virtues of electrified station wagons. In fact, in the segment, plug-in hybrid technology was preferred. The Chinese manufacturer MG therefore seizes the opportunity to draw the first and will embark on the adventure on the French market with its MG5. The opening of orders will take place in February 2022, followed by an arrival in concession in stride.
A station wagon in the Dacia Jogger format
4.54 m long, a size equivalent to that of a Dacia Jogger, the MG5 is based on a 2.66 m wheelbase which allows lithium-ion type batteries to be accommodated without encroaching on the loading volume. The hold of the station wagon is capable of accommodating between 578 l in a 5-seater configuration and 1,456 l when the rear seat is folded down. In addition, the vehicle can tow a trailer of 500 kg, of which 50 kg at the boom. Ideal for loading a bicycle rack here. It also accepts 75 kg on the roof.
MG5 Award (2022)
The MG5 is approved for a range of 400 km according to the WLTP cycle. Its accumulator has a capacity of 61.1 kWh. Later, a version with a 50 kWh battery will be also available, with a limited range of 320 km (WLTP). MG is already announcing two trim levels called Comfort and Luxury (see below) and above all an entry ticket below the € 30,000 mark. A price as usual very aggressive. Comparatively, a Volkswagen ID.3 starts at 34,750 €. And again, it is a sedan and not a station wagon. Generally, the price difference observed between the two types of bodywork is € 1,000.

The MG5’s technical sheet specifies a power of 135 kW (the equivalent of 184 hp) with a torque value of 280 Nm. In terms of acceleration, the car is capable of reaching 50 km / h in 3.4 s and achieves 0 to 100 km / h in 8.3 s. The Chinese brand insists on the presence ofan 11 kW three-phase on-board charger filling 80% of the battery in 30 minutes.
A novelty not really new?
The MG5 station wagon has already been marketed in England since spring 2021, however this model is none other than the Roewe Ei5 which was presented in 2017 at the Shanghai Motor Show. MG promises that the version that will arrive in France in 2022 will be modernized. Case to follow.
