Mercedes could present at the Munich Motor Show 2021, which will be held from September 7 to 12, the electric version of the G-Class, named EQG. The EQG 560 and EQG 580 versions are expected for the off-road launch.
The 100% electric version of the Mercedes G-Class has been officially announced in November 2019 after months of rumor, but the all-terrain “zero emission” is slow to show. According to the latest rumors from the hallway, this would be the brand’s surprise with the star for the 2021 Munich Motor Show, which will be held next September.
EQG, a long-standing project
Like the EQV which is the electric variant of the Class V, the battery-powered Class G should be called EQG, a name that the Daimler group had filed with the European Trademark and Patent Office in 2016. Seen from the outside, it should stand out from his alter ego thermal by glossy black panel replacing the traditional radiator grille. As on the EQS, a constellation of small three-pointed stars could embellish this bodywork element. The rims could receive some blue finishing details. But the EQG should remain aesthetically very close to the G-Class gasoline and diesel.
The 4 x 4 2.0
In order for the EQG to retain the crossing abilities of the thermal G-Class, it is likely to rely on a deeply modified version of the latter’s chassis rather than Mercedes’ new modular EVA platform. The vehicle should have two engines, providing electrically managed four-wheel drive, and a large capacity battery housed under the floor. The disappearance of the central drive shaft could allow the EQG to maintain high ground clearance despite the installation of its battery. Two versions should be marketed at launch, badged EQG 560 and EQG 580, Mercedes having filed these names last April. At the top of the range, the silent adventurer could display a power greater than 500 hp and a range of more than 500 km in WLTP cycle.
See you at the beginning of September for confirmation. Mercedes has also announced for Munich the EQE sedan, the EQS Maybach SUV concept, the C-Class All-Terrain, the armored S-Class Guard, as well as the GT Coupe 4-door plug-in hybrid from AMG.
