According to a British survey of more than 1,000 divorced or separating women, the menopause could be a common cause of divorce in a couple. Seven out of 10 women even say their menopausal symptoms — like mood swings or low libido — contributed to their divorce.
The majority of them also acknowledged that having received help or hormone replacement therapy to relieve symptoms could have saved their relationship.

Because if the main symptoms of menopause likecessation of periods and hot flashes are relatively well known to the general public, there are lesser known signs that can affect a woman’s daily life, and sometimes those around her who do not understand what she is going through. The drop in hormones in the body can indeed generate other more unexpected symptoms such as anxiety attacks, brain fog, great fatigue or even changes in the nails, skin or hair.
“While the physical symptoms of menopause are well known and often discussed, the mental health impact is often overlooked and can be catastrophic for many women, which has a profoundly negative effect on their work, relationships and finances.“, confirmed Dr. Louise Newson, doctor specializing in menopause in charge of the survey.
How to limit bothersome symptoms?
Against the symptoms of menopause, existing treatments can be hormonal or natural. Hormone replacement therapy will compensate for the decrease in estrogen responsible for the adverse effects experienced. However, it is not without risk and is only prescribed in the event of symptoms having a strong impact on the quality of life. Indeed, it would increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer as well as the risk of thrombosis and stroke.
Certain herbs such as hops, flax seeds, sage or ginseng can help relieve certain symptoms, such as hot flashes or mood disorders. Good hydration, minimum 1.5L per day, can also have its benefits.
