The national federation of medical gynecology colleges is working towards better management of menopause.
- “Menopause is an inevitable stage in a woman’s life and yet it is poorly understood and poorly supported. The result is suffering that is too ignored,” believes the national federation of medical gynecology colleges (FNCGM).
- The FNCGM therefore indicates that it is currently working on raising awareness among the professional community about menopause and on dedicated training to improve practices.
- Menopause causes symptoms that can considerably hamper daily life and have consequences on the physical, psychological and emotional health of women.
“The national federation of medical gynecology colleges (FNCGM) aims to change practices for better management of menopause”, we learn in a press release.
“Menopause is an inevitable stage in a woman’s life and yet it is poorly understood and poorly supported. The result is suffering that is too ignored.” indeed believe gynecologists. “Recently, several celebrities have decided to speak out on this still taboo subject. Their testimonies help to raise awareness of the need to change the management of peri-menopause and menopause”add the specialists.
Menopause: symptoms that can hamper daily life
The cessation of ovarian production of estrogens and progesterone causes symptoms which can considerably hamper daily life and have consequences on the physical, psychological and emotional health of women: hot flashes, changes in the menstrual cycle, sleep disorders , mood disorders, dryness of the skin, hair and vagina, urinary incontinence, headaches, fatigue, weight gain, increased risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.
“At the origin of this medical abandonment of menopausal women is a progressive distrust of hormonal treatments for menopause (THM) triggered by an American study, the WHI, whose first results published in 2002 made the link between hormonal treatment of menopause and an increased risk of breast cancer and cardiovascular accidents”, recalls the federation. “However, it later turned out that the women followed in this study increased the number of carcinogenic and cardiological risk factors (obesity, advanced age, late treatment, diabetes, etc.)”, she continues.
“Since then, other studies and recommendations have evaluated the benefit-risk balance in favor of hormonal treatment according to the importance of the climacteric disorders and the state of health of the person concerned”analyze the gynecologists. “In addition, for postmenopausal women who are unwilling or unable to be prescribed HRT, there are other non-hormone treatments available to relieve symptoms,” they write.
Raising awareness in the professional community about menopause
“Due to a lack of information, general practitioners and gynecologists have generally abandoned the treatment of the symptoms of peri-menopause and menopause. Women have rightly felt abandoned,” they finish.
As a national federation of medical gynecology colleges, the FNCGM therefore indicates that it is currently working on raising awareness among the professional community about menopause and on dedicated training to develop practices.
