It is a recent American study which says it: women who have never smoked or who have quit smoking know less hot flashes than others at the time of menopause … One more good reason to say “goodbye” to smoking!
To arrive at this conclusion, researchers at the University of Illinois (United States) followed for 7 years the state of health of 761 voluntary women and in good physical condition, aged 45 to 54 years. Verdict: at the time of menopause, women who did not smoke (or more) experienced 45% less hot flashes compared to others. In addition, the hot flashes of the ex-smokers were also less intense.
“We noticed that this statistic was only valid for women who had never smoked in their life, or for those who had stopped at least 5 years before the age of their menopause, nuance Rebecca Smith, epidemiologist and main author of the study. Consequently, the more we stop smoking the earlier, the better you go through your menopause afterwards. “
“For the moment, we cannot explain what this difference is due to, adds the researcher. However, we do know that the substances in tobacco have an impact on the hormonal system of women, as well as the activity of their neurotransmitters. “
It should be remembered that to date, France has 16 million smokers: 46% of women aged 20-25. And tobacco kills 200 people a day, in France alone. (source: tobacco info service)
