Many women wanted to stop their hormone replacement therapy (HRT) after the publication of studies suggesting that it could lead to an increase in breast cancer and vascular disease. But, embarrassed by the resumption of hot flashes, many ask their gynecologist to prescribe them again. “This is not surprising, because these treatments are often stopped abruptly and no help is offered as a relay” underlines Dr Bérengère Arnal-Schnebelen *. The body must then face a real withdrawal syndrome that a gentle withdrawal could have avoided.
Proceeding in stages is essential: “If we gradually reduce the doses of hormones by combining herbal medicine to prevent hot flashes, weaning is likely to go well,” said the specialist. The woman switches to one press of estrogen gel (instead of two or three) and one natural progesterone capsule per day. She follows this treatment every two days, then, as soon as there is improvement, every three days, every four … Even if it means going back for a while if the hot flashes become annoying again.
Plants for six months
The treatment must include both plants which mimic the action of estrogens (soy, sage, flax, hops, etc.) and others which mimic that of progestins (chaste tree, alchemilla). It is sometimes necessary to supplement the treatment with minerals, vitamins (especially group B) as well as fish and borage oils for their antioxidant properties. These products are available over the counter in pharmacies but, to choose, it is better to seek advice from your gynecologist, general practitioner or pharmacist.
Several months of treatment are often necessary. Warning: the assimilation of these plants requires a good quality intestinal flora, to ensure good absorption. In the event of chronic digestive disorders (bloating, diarrhea, constipation) the intake of probiotics and prebiotics may be indicated.
It is also necessary to fight against vaginal dryness, a source of itching and repeated infections. It is possible without hormones, with a natural local treatment (Phytosoya®, Replens®, Mucogyne® …). By ensuring to be followed gynecologically, of course.
