Since the start of the meningitis vaccination campaign, more than 5,400 people have been vaccinated. In total, 30,000 are affected by the operation.
The anti-meningitis vaccination campaign continues in Dijon. Since January 4, more than 5,400 students and officials of the Dijon campus of the University of Burgundy have been vaccinated against this potentially fatal infectious disease, announced the Regional Health Agency (ARS) rejoicing that “the mobilization is not weakening not “.
This vast vaccination system was launched in early January after the report of invasive meningococcal W infection which occurred between October and December 2016 in 3 students, two of whom died. It is divided into 3 phases and concerns a total of more than 30,000 people.
At the end of the first phase, which ended on January 6, more than 1,400 students and staff had received the injection. Launched on January 9, the second phase will end on January 20 and concerns more than 10,000 people studying or working at the Faculty of Law and Letters. The operation will then be extended to the whole university in order to interrupt the circulation of the germ responsible for these meningitis.
Avoid healthy carriers
This inflammation of the meninges (envelopes of the brain) is most often manifested by a combination of signs such as severe headache, stiff neck, high fever, intolerance to light, and nausea or vomiting. Unsupported, it can kill in a matter of days. “Meningococcus is a very fragile germ which does not survive in the environment, but is transmitted through saliva and there may be healthy carriers on campus,” explains the ARS. The vaccine used, in a single dose, protects against four strains of meningococcus (A, C, Y and W).
The ARS specifies that vaccination is organized on campus in the “Multiplex” room from Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm. A toll-free number has also been set up (0 805 200 550) and has already recorded 870 calls since January 3.
In addition, Public Health France is preparing to launch a survey of students to “better understand the brakes and levers of an action of this scale”, indicates the ARS.
