According to the French Network of Regional Pharmacovigilance Centers (RFCRPV), many medicines can increase your blood sugar level. If the rate does not vary for the most part for people in good health, mistrust is in order for diabetics.
Medicines disrupt blood sugar
Blood sugar is the amount of sugar present in the blood. Normally regulated by two hormones, insulin and glucagon, blood sugar can be disturbed by certain drugs that can cause high blood sugar, mainly caused by diabetes (blood sugar exceeds normal values) or hypoglycemia (blood sugar drops below normal values).
The RFCRPV lists many drugs that can cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate: syrups (many syrups are very sweet and can contain 60 g of sugar per 100 ml); decongestants (against stuffy nose and colds); homeopathic granules and the birth control pills (especially the estrogen-progestogen pill).
Danger for people with diabetes
Taking these drugs is first and foremost dangerous for people prone to diabetes, which no longer secrete insulin. These people must therefore remain vigilant and seek advice from their doctor, without stopping the prescribed treatment before medical advice.
However, ” if there is no disorder, drugs containing sugar or decreasing the action of insulin do not cause hyperglycaemia », Reassures Professor Nathalie Jeandidier, from the Strasbourg University Hospital, to Medisite.
