Following advice from two independent expert groups, the British Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, announced that the prescription of medicines based on therapeutic cannabis would be possible in UK from autumn, as is already the case in Germany. These prescriptions will be possible for “patients with exceptional clinical needs” such as children suffering from a severe form. epilepsy called Dravet syndrome.
“Making medical cannabis available on prescription will improve the lives of patients who are currently suffering in silence. There is nothing more difficult than watching loved ones suffer, which is why I made this decision,” wrote the Minister of the Interior on Twitter.
The Department of Health and Social Affairs and the Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) will now clearly define what goes on the list of cannabis-derived drugs so that they can be prescribed.
