During the Great Health Conference, the government announced the further regionalization of the numerus clausus. A measure welcomed by medical students.
To fight against medical deserts, the government wants to reform the numerus clausus. During the Great Health Conference which was held this Thursday, Prime Minister Manuel Valls, and Minister of Health Marisol Touraine announced its regionalization.
This measure, proposed by the National Council of the Order of Physicians and the Conference of Deans, has been tested since the end of 2015 in 10 regions. The number of students admitted to the second year at the end of the competition is set according to regional needs, and the training capacity of universities.
The government therefore decided to continue this experiment and extend it to the entire territory. Discussions with the regions and medical faculties should therefore start soon for its implementation.
“Until today, the numerus clausus in medicine was a bit obscure. We didn’t really know how it was decided, explained to Why actor Maxime Rifad the vice-president of ANEMF (the National Association of Medical Students of France). Today, there is a real desire to work with regional actors such as regional observatories for the demography of health professions, regional health agencies to assess the needs in the territories. ”
Improve training
For the representative of medical students, the regionalization of the numerus clausus will improve training. “What especially attracts our attention is the desire to work with universities and CHUs to determine the number of externs they can accommodate for internships. Because today in certain departments, they are too numerous and do not benefit from a good training ”, explains Maxime Rifad.
But despite this progress, ANEMF fears the regionalization of training. “Today, it is very disparate from one territory to another,” says the vice-president. We want a standardization of practices. “
Paramedics will be able to access medical studies without passing the competitive examination
Manuel Valls wishes to develop bridges between paramedical and medical studies. From 2017, paramedical graduates, such as physiotherapists or nurses, will be able to enter 2th or 3th year on file. They will therefore not have to take the competition for the first year. Consultation with those involved in these training courses will be carried out in order to specify “the prerequisites required of students, particularly in terms of professional practice”, specifies the roadmap unveiled at the end of the Great Health Conference.
