Marvel’s Avengers should have been a huge success on paper, but it turns out to be headed for a pathetic ending.
When you say Marvel, you say astronomical buckets of money. For years, the superhero giant has dominated the box office and it seemed for a long time that the game industry had to believe that too. Surprisingly, it has been known for some time that the superhero game Marvel’s Avengers is actually not a success at all. The nail in the coffin is another update that makes painfully clear just how much of a failure the project has been.
Marvel’s Avengers Update
Square Enix had big plans for the Avengers game, but from a recent blog post shows how pathetic the project actually is. With Patch 2.2, Spider Man finally added to the game. On the PlayStation version of the game, by the way. And not for all other owners who bought the game for the same price for Stadia, Xbox Series X, Xbox One or PC.
This stunt looks like it’s a rights issue. Spider-Man is one of the few Marvel superheroes whose rights belong to Sony. There is always a fuss about that and now the billion-dollar companies are once again showing how pathetic the whole thing is; only owners of Sony’s PlayStation 4 and 5 will get the Sony-exclusive Spider-Man.
Painful statement
In line with this, Square Enix presented its quarterly figures this week. The company does a fine job as long as you leave out Marvel’s Avengers. Square Enix itself says that the game “unfortunately does not turn out to be the success we hoped for.” The company continues: “While the new challenges the game has brought about have produced a very disappointing outcome, we are confident that the service-oriented approach will make the game more popular.” Ouch.
