To be happier, having sex more often would not be the solution, according to a recent study. Rather, this suggests arousing desire by changing your habits.
Does making love often really make you happier? Not necessarily, according to a recent study published in Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization. These studies show that, on the contrary, having a lot of sex leads to a loss of desire and pleasure.
To arrive at these conclusions, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University (United States) recruited 128 volunteers aged 35 to 65, and married. They then divided the sixty of couples into two groups. The first received no instructions from the researchers while they asked the second group to have twice as many reports per week as usual.
Less happy, less desire and pleasure
During the 3 months of the experiment, participants were asked to complete a questionnaire to assess the frequency of intercourse, desire and pleasure related to sex and measure their level of happiness.
Analyzing the responses, the researchers observed that the second group was no happier than before. These couples even report having less desire to make love and taking less pleasure. According to the study, if the participants were not happier, it was precisely because they no longer enjoyed sex as much.
Make sex fun
However, the authors stress that these consequences may also be related to the way the study was conducted. By asking them to have more sex instead of inciting or encouraging them, the researchers were able to cause some blockage in the participants. That’s why lead study author George Loewenstein continues to believe that having sex often can be beneficial and make people happier.
For Tamar Krishnamurti, author of the study, the important thing would be more the way of doing things than the frequency: “When the libido starts to decrease, the sexual desire decreases more quickly than the pleasure provided by the sex. So instead of wanting to get back to their early sexuality, couples should start by creating an environment that arouses excitement and makes sex fun, ”she explains.
