The corona crisis has caused aggravated psychological problems in 60% of the Dutch population. Due to a lack of social contacts, spontaneity and security, life has become less fun for them. This is evident from a study by EenVandaag.
Especially mental complaints among young people
The mental complaints range from minor effects, such as worrying and being irritable, to more serious symptoms such as depression and panic attacks. Of the people over the age of 65, 48 percent say they have experienced mental complaints as a result of the corona crisis. Of the people up to the age of 30, 74 percent say they have (had) complaints so far. This means that the mental complaints among young people are considerably greater than among the older age groups.
From another research by CentERdata, Victim Support Fund, NIVEL and Tilburg University shows that the mental complaints among more specific groups, such as job seekers and students, were more common during the coronavirus outbreak. The same pattern occurred in people with heart problems.
Stress, uncertainty and despondency
The most common complaints among young people are stress, loneliness and persistent fatigue. Uncertainty about a home or job, extra work pressure and caring for young children are frequently mentioned problems. But little contact with others and the despondency about the end of the crisis also cause mental problems.
Life less fun due to corona
Of all respondents, no less than 6 in 10 say that their life has become less fun due to the crisis. The changes in social life, meeting new people, partying and spontaneously visiting terraces are the most frequently mentioned cause.
Still satisfied
It is striking that 73 percent of the respondents in the survey indicate that they are satisfied. However, that is still somewhat lower than in January of this year; at that time, 80 percent were still satisfied with their lives. According to EenVandaag, one explanation for the optimism is that people have been able to adapt quite well to the changes of the past six months.
