Mac Donald’s wishes to show that the issue of antibiotic resistance do not leave him indifferent. With this in mind, the fast-food brand intends to put in place a plan to reduce the use in its burgers of beef treated with antibiotics.
This measure of reduction (and not elimination) of antibiotics will be implemented gradually. The first part will consist of studying the use of antibiotics in the ten countries which provide 85% of the beef used, in particular the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia.
CNN recalls that there is little data on the use of antibiotics in the global beef industry. Mac Donald’s therefore intends to set up “regional pilot tests to determine the basic use of antibiotics in each of the 10 countries” which are the largest suppliers of beef.
Antibiotic resistance, a global public health issue
Based on these tests, antibiotic reduction targets will be defined by country by the end of 2020.

The number of deaths per year in the world is estimated at 700,000 linked to infections due to bacteria resistant to antibiotics, recalls Inserm. In Europe this represents 25,000 deaths per year.
