Canadian researchers have just demonstrated that LSD could help psychotherapy to relieve mental health illnesses. According to the team of researchers from the University of British Columbia (Canada), previous studies have already demonstrated the effectiveness of the controlled use of these drugs.
Researchers analyzed studies already conducted on participants to understand the effects of hallucinogenic drugs on mental illness. They found that many side effects such as “bad trip” are due to excessive consumption of these drugs for recreational use. They explain that previous studies carried out on participants in the United States, Europe and Canada have shown that they would have clinical efficacy and few side effects in patients with psychological illnesses.
One of the tests cited by the researchers revealed that psychotherapy using LSD could reduce anxiety caused by terminal illnesses. Another showed that the active molecule that is present in hallucinogenic mushrooms could be useful in the treatment of alcohol addiction. In addition, another study showed that ecstasy may reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in people who have not seen improvements with conventional treatments.
Since hallucinogenic drugs are illegal, it is more difficult for researchers to conduct research on humans.
“Medical research must continue because scientific experiments on these hallucinogenic drugs could offer new ways to treat mental illness and addiction in patients who are not benefiting from mainstream treatments,” says Dr. Evan Wood, one of the authors of the analysis, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
