In its Weekly Epidemiological Bulletin (BEH), the National Institute for Sanitary Surveillance (Invs) reviews the treatment of treated end-stage renal failure (IRTT) in France. “Each year in our country, nearly 10,000 people start replacement therapy, mainly by dialysis. Despite the increase in the sample, less than 3,000 people benefit each year from a kidney transplant, mainly among the 41,000 patients in dialysis”. For others, the wait can be long: the time between registration on the list of recipients and the operation varies from 9 to more than 4 years depending on the region.
But this waiting time also varies according to the blood group: thus, as recalled a few months ago the National Biomedicine Agency, the median waiting time for a kidney transplant is 14.9 months for patients with blood group A but it is 39 months for patients with group B. This period also varies according to the age of the patient. receiver: the wait is longest between 30 and 55 years old.
Kidney transplant in figures
– As of December 31, 2011, there were 57,447 people in replacement therapy in the 18 regions (1.6 times more men than women), 55% of whom were on dialysis and 45% had a functioning kidney transplant.
– The first treatment modality remained center hemodialysis and no significant development of independent dialysis was observed. Dialysis was started urgently for one in three patients (33%).
– In 2012, 3,044 kidney transplants were performed in France, including 12% from a living donor.
