9 months after his accident in Suzuka, Japan, F1 driver Jules Bianchi succumbed to his injuries. He died at the Nice University Hospital on July 17.
The race is over for Jules Bianchi. The Formula 1 driver, plunged into a coma since October 5, succumbed to his injuries. In a press release, his family expresses all their grief and thanks the staff of the Nice University Hospital (Alpes-Maritimes), where he was hospitalized.
Since 1994, no Formula 1 driver has been killed on the circuit. The last accident to date marked the spirits: at the wheel of his single-seater, Ayrton Senna lost his life on the Imola circuit (Italy). The vehicle went off the runway before colliding with a concrete wall.
The violence of Jules Bianchi’s accident is no less. On the Suzuka circuit (Japan), the 25-year-old Frenchman got into a tow truck which was towing a competing single-seater. Immediately after the accident, he was taken care of at Mie Hospital (Japan). A brain hematoma is operated on, but the young pilot suffers from a diffuse axonal injury. This head trauma affects a large area of the brain and affects the nerve fibers connecting neurons to synapses.
In November, Jules Bianchi was transferred to the CHU of Nice, the city from which he was born. A long battle then began, which ended on July 17. “Jules fought to the end, as he always has, but yesterday his battle was over. We feel immense and indescribable grief, ”wrote the family, who thanked the staff of the CHU. The Marussia team, where the Niçois raced, also expressed their sorrow.
