In 2016, Inserm conducted a survey on “The French and rheumatism”. The results of this study showed that rheumatism affects more people than you think. The vast majority of people who responded to the survey (93%) had experienced joint pain at least once in their life. 8 out of 10 French people have even experienced it several times. And 1 in 2 French people (1 in 3 young people aged 18-24) admitted to suffering from it when answering the survey. Three quarters of them recognized that this joint pain had an impact on sleep, leisure, professional life, family life or married life.
Can we prevent rheumatism?
In the absence of treatment, it is possible to act on rheumatism via their prevention. Researchers advise developing the concept of “joint capital”, capital to be preserved at all costs throughout life. “The loss of this capital leads to a sedentary lifestyle, the harmful consequences of which for the heart and blood vessels, among others, are known to” underline Inserm researchers.
This osteoarticular capital is based on:
- Physical activity adapted to osteoarticular disease.
- A balanced diet to avoid overweight, a major risk factor for rheumatism.
- Quitting smoking and good oral hygiene, two proven risk factors for the initiation and aggravation of rheumatoid arthritis.
- Prevention of falls in the elderly responsible for fractures in patients with osteoporosis.
