Former Loft Story participant Jean-Edouard Lipa has announced that he escaped the amputation of his left leg. The member was threatened by “a 10 cm double aneurysm of the popliteal artery”.
- Aneurysms can affect the arteries of different organs: brain, pelvis, liver, kidney, and, in the case of Jean-Edouard Lipa, the legs.

“Difficult awakening after 8 hours of surgery but a leg saved thanks to the talent of Doctor Laurian…” The former participant of Loft Story Jean-Edouard Lipa, whose aquatic antics with Loana made an impression, announced on Instagram that he had escaped the amputation of his left leg. The member was threatened with “a 10 cm double aneurysm of the popliteal artery”, diagnosed more than a month ago.

Localized dilation of an artery
An aneurysm is the localized dilation of an artery (more rarely, a vein). This progressive development weakens the wall of the artery which, from a certain size, can crack or break, causing sudden internal bleeding: this is the rupture of an aneurysm.. Aneurysms can affect the arteries of different organs: brain, pelvis, liver, kidney, and, in the case of Jean-Edouard Lipa, the legs. We speak then “popliteal artery aneurysm” (the popliteal artery is located behind the knee, editor’s note).
A significant amputation rate
Popliteal artery aneurysm is a frequent pathology, representing 70% of peripheral aneurysms. This problem almost exclusively affects men aged around 60/70 (the case of Jean-Edouard Lipa is exceptional), and is favored by smoking or family history.
Unlike the abdominal aortic aneurysm, the majority (about 60%) of popliteal aneurysms are symptomatic. The patient may in particular have black spots on the toes and pain in the calf.
The main risk of this type of aneurysm is occlusion of the popliteal artery, which is associated with a significant rate of amputation. To repair popliteal aneurysms larger than 2.5 centimeters in diameter, open surgery is usually performed.
