Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers
Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers questions about medicines. This time: is there an alternative to my blood pressure lowering agent?
Last fall I was helped by a heart attack. I have been taking amlodipine for high blood pressure ever since, but I suffer from side effects. Is there a natural product that I can use as an alternative?
Answer:
After a heart attack, you are given a whole series of medicines, which are mainly intended to prevent the heart from getting into trouble again. Part of the treatment is to keep blood pressure low. High blood pressure is an extra burden on the heart. The medication used to lower blood pressure is less important. Usually the choice is made for a remedy that suits you best. You must use the medicines for a long time. It is therefore worth looking further if you experience side effects. There are plenty of other drugs to switch to. Dietary supplements are not a suitable alternative because they work less well. Healthy living always helps.
