Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers
Pharmacist Sonja Keizers answers questions about medicines. This time: is there a better remedy for asthma?
Because of asthma I use a spray (fluticasone) to inhale. When this is almost finished, it works less well and I take an extra dose. Have better resources been developed over the years?
Answer:
Corticosteroids, such as fluticasone, form the basis of treatment in asthma. They inhibit inflammation and prevent new hypersensitivity reactions. Proper operation requires consistent use. Correct inhalation technique is also important. The spray (or dose aerosol) should be shaken well before each use so that each dose contains the same amount of medicine. That way it would not be necessary to take more doses. If a corticosteroid alone is not enough, the next step is to add a drug that widens the airways. For example, a nebulizer with both an anti-inflammatory and a bronchodilator (formoterol). In case of complaints, an extra inhalation can be taken. Talk to your doctor about what is possible in your situation.
