Intermittent fasting without calorie restriction would be favorable to weight maintenance and metabolism, according to the results of a study published in the medical journal Cell Research. The findings of the study were observed in mice.
Researchers at the University of Toronto in Canada looked at the effect of intermittent fasting, without calorie restriction, in mice for 16 weeks. Rodents had access to food for 2 days and followed the fast for 1 day.
Stabilize the metabolism
The results of the study showed that the health of mice is significantly influenced by daily eating habits.
At the end of the study, the scientists found that this diet had allowed changes in the weight and health of the rodents.
Indeed, the mice tested weighed less than the mice in the control group and the accumulation of white fat was reduced in favor of brown fat, involved in the combustion of energy and the production of body heat. Intermittent fasting also helped stabilize their metabolic system.
“We have found that intermittent fasting not only prevents obesityin mice, but also improves metabolism by changing the quality of fat in the body, ”says Dr. Hoon-Ki Sung, assistant professor of laboratory medicine and pathobiology at the University of Toronto.
The results are exciting because they show that the weightloss is not the only benefit of fasting. It also restores the dual function of fat cells, which is to store and release energy.
