The latest major annual survey on the health of high school and university students* has just been published. And the results are cause for concern!
We already learn that, while 8 students out of 10 and 9 high school students out of 10 declare themselves to be “in good health”, more than 80% of them admit that they “do not systematically go to the doctor” when they are sick, but “wait for it to pass” (57% of students and 54% of high school students). The reason, of course, is financial: 21% of students also believe that “the consultations are too expensive”.
In terms of sexual health, students are on the whole cautious: 44% of students say they “use a condom every time they have sex” (to protect against STDs for 71%, to avoid pregnancy for 70%). On the other hand, only 1 student out of 2 is screened in the event of a change of partner; this percentage drops to 22% among high school students.
Misconceptions about AIDS: still relevant!
Preconceived ideas have a hard tooth since 12% of students think that one can be infected with HIV by kissing an HIV-positive person, 6% by drinking from their glass, 3% by shaking their hand, 17% by simply being contact with it, and finally, 19% by a mosquito bite. In addition, 2 out of 10 students and high school students believe that AIDS is easily cured today…
It is on the side of violence and discrimination that things get tough. Thus, 1 out of 3 students and 1 out of 4 high school students say they “have already suffered violence” – whether physical, verbal, psychological or sexual. The vast majority of this violence (for 75% of students and 89% of high school students) is verbal, followed by psychological attacks (54% and 35%) and physical attacks (32% vs 24%). Sexual violence, meanwhile, concerns 9% of students and 4% of high school students… Terrifying!
