Faced with the growing number of couples affected by infertility, the Biomedicine Agency wishes to recruit nearly 1,200 donors
“Become a giver of happiness”, this is the watchword of the new campaign of the Biomedicine Agency. Over the past five years, egg and sperm donation has increased, but demand is also growing. This year, 3,000 new couples in France have asked health professionals to be able to give birth. The Biomedicine Agency launches its national campaign to raise awareness of donations. According to her, nearly 1,200 donors must be recruited.
3,000 new couples affected by infertility
In 2014, 1,326 children were born thanks to donated gametes. And since 2011, donations have increased by 40%. Nevertheless, for the Biomedicine Agency, efforts should be continued. This year, to enable the 3,000 couples affected by infertility to become parents, 900 egg donors and 300 sperm donors should be recruited. In 2014, only 245 men and 501 women took this step.
Facilitate the care of donors
To meet growing demand, the Biomedicine Agency wishes to strengthen and facilitate donor care. Since the end of 2015, people who have not yet had children have been able to donate their oocytes and sperm. This should make it possible to “multiply the number of donors and lower their age,” explains the Agency in its press release. She recalls medical care (ultrasound, hormonal tests, consultations) from which donors will benefit are covered at 100%. France now has donation centers throughout its territory, 27 dedicated to sperm donation and 28 to egg donation.
