Too much salt, too much sugar but also endocrine disruptors. Here is what most industrial tomato sauces found on the market would contain, according to the magazine 60 Million Consumers.
Industrial tomato sauces are too salty and too sweet
In its April issue, the 60 Million Consumers Association scrutinized sixty labels of tomato sauces and its conclusions are worrying: too much salt, too much sugar and above all, the presence of pesticides and endocrine disruptors.
As is often the case with industrial processed foods, 60 million consumers have noted a too high salt content: ” The average fluctuates between 0.92 and 1 g / 100 g “. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends not to exceed 5 grams of salt per day, at the risk of developing cardiovascular problems in particular: hypertension and stroke.
Too much sugar has also been noted: tomatoes naturally contain sugar and to correct their acidity, manufacturers do not hesitate to add more. According to the analyzes of the association, “ added sugars represent about half of measured sugars “. ” A portion of 100 grams of industrial tomato sauce provides on average the equivalent of a piece of sugar (5-6 grams) “.
Industrial tomato sauces: focus on organic
More worryingly, the analyzes highlighted the presence of pesticides: ” More than half of our references have at least one pesticide residue », Warns the association. ” The presence of molecules suspected of being endocrine disruptors like carbendazim “Was also detected in the state of” trace “, While the European Union only authorizes it as” residue “.
The magazine has thus established a classification of tomato sauces: it is not surprising that for a healthy tomato sauce, you have to pay the price and bet on organic and the absence of preservatives. The four best-rated sauces are the Neapolitan tomato sauce from Cora, the Bio Village tomato sauce with basil, the Maison Prosain Provencal tomato sauce and the Jardin bio double tomato puree.
