The calculations are not good! In 2019, France registered 753,000 births. If this figure may seem impressive, it is in fact lower than the previous year: 6,000 more babies were born in 2018. Conversely, there were 2,000 additional deaths, for a total of 612,000 in total. year 2019 reveals INSEE, whose figures have been taken over by AFP and relayed in Le Figaro.
That said, the balance continues to be positive. Indeed, at the end of 2019 we were 141,000 additional French people. That said, this is the lowest number since WWII! On average, women have 1.87 children. Barely less than in 2018, which recorded 1.88. But the fertility rate has nonetheless been on a downward trend since 2015.
Women’s life expectancy on the rise
However, while there were 6,000 fewer babies in 2019, compared to 2018, the decline is smaller than in previous years. Between 2015 and 2018, the number of births fell less and less: we went from 20,000 fewer babies to 12,000 in 2018. This figure was halved in 2019! INSEE describes this as “stabilization of fertility“.
The fewer children women have … the later they live! Life expectancy at birth has increased overall in France: 85.6 years for women and 79.7 years for men. Over the years, the gap between the two sexes narrowed. France has more seniors: on January 1, 20.5% of French people were 65 or over, compared to 12.8% in 1985.
