The AstraZeneca vaccine continues to make ink flow. In France, since March 2021, this vaccine has been reserved for adults aged 55 and over: for those under 55 who have received a first dose of AstraZeneca, the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS) recently recommended the administration of a dose of mRNA vaccine (Pfizer/BioNtech or Moderna) to complete the vaccination schedule.
These precautions are motivated by a “a possible link” between the administration of the AstraZeneca vaccine and the appearance of blood clots (thrombosis) in “very rare“patients, as explained by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in a press release published in early April 2021.
In Chile, an even more severe decision has just been taken: while the country received its first doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine this Friday, April 23, 2021, the local health authorities have decided to reserve this vaccine for men over the age of 18. .
AstraZeneca: the risk of thrombosis at the heart of concerns
A decision that has evolved since, last week, the Public Health Institute (ISP) of Chile recommended the AstraZeneca vaccine to men over 18 and to women over 55. This Friday, April 23, 2021, the Under-Secretary of State for Health, Paula Daza, nevertheless refined this recommendation by limiting vaccination to the male population.
How to explain this decision? Again, it was the risk of a blood clot that tipped the scales. Because, as we know, the risk of vein thrombosis is higher in women on contraceptive pills or hormonal treatment for menopause, in pregnant women or who have just given birth, or in people who suffer from a chronic inflammatory disease (lupus, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis …) – mainly female pathologies.
In Europe, the EMA nevertheless declared that there was “not enough data available across EUto assert that the risk of thrombosis is sex-related.
To date, 6.18 million Chileans have received 2 doses of vaccine against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus: 32.6% of the vaccinated population is thus fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
