Since 2013, the Italian neurosurgeon, Sergio Canavero, announces as a crazy bet of graft a living human head on a brain dead body. The first goal would be to allow quadriplegics, or people with incurable diseases, to find a body like new. This Dr. Frankenstein had already advanced in January 2016, having achieved this feat on monkeys. The animal would have survived for 20 hours.
The evidence is still awaited
During a press conference in Vienna, Sergio Canavero this time claimed to have succeeded in grafting the head of a human, deceased, on the corpse of another. As with the monkey, this feat would have taken place in China with the help of doctor Xiaoping Ren and his team from Harbin University. The operation would have lasted 18 hours, the time necessary to reconnect the spines, nerves and blood vessels of the two individuals. Before the final step, which is the transplant of the head of a living person, Sergio Canavero hopes to succeed in one last experiment: a brain transplant between two deceased humans.
Strongly criticized by his peers for the lack of reflection of such a project (especially on the question of transplant rejection and ethics), this neurologist will continue his experiments in China. For now, no data or photos have been made public. The final report is expected to be released in the coming days.
