Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia. What are the early signs and causes of Alzheimer’s disease?
Symptoms
The first symptoms are almost the same in every form of dementia. First of all, short-term memory is affected. Someone with Alzheimer’s forgets what the conversation is about or asks the same thing several times. The person looks dreamy, absent and has problems with:
– follow a conversation
– plan
– to remember
– solution-oriented thinking
– to take decisions
Causes
No direct causes of Alzheimer’s have yet been identified. It has been shown that the disease is caused by protein accumulations. For example, research has been done into the so-called amyloid-beta protein. This toxic protein deposits between the brain cells and according to many researchers is the cause of Alzheimer’s disease. Sleep deprivation causes a decrease in protein and can therefore indirectly be a cause.
Risk Factors
However, there are risk factors. In addition to old age (people over 65 are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s), cardiovascular diseases play a role in the disease. These cause strokes, which increase the risk of Alzheimer’s. Aspects of cardiovascular disease are therefore also important in the prevention of Alzheimer’s. Think of high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and an elevated cholesterol level.
